Safety certificates - When, why and how?
Safety certificates (formerly known as Roadworthy certificates) are important if you want to be able to drive on Queensland’s public roads. While unlike some states, here in QLD you do not need to get a new safety certificate every year, you will require one if you are
transferring the vehicle registration to a new owner
changing your car’s registration to Queensland plates from another state
(and next, the one many people may not be aware of)
re-registering a car for which the registration has expired
That first one is something to be particularly aware of, as failure to provide a current safety certificate (certificates are valid for 2 months or 2000kms from date of inspection) when selling your registered vehicle can result in a $700 fine. You can still advertise a car without the RWC, but the buyer won’t be able to transfer the vehicle from your name to theirs until the safety certificate has been provided, which on top of the potential fine will also make you liable for any toll charges received or other infringements by that vehicle. So while they’re not something that will necessarily aid in extending a vehicle’s lifespan, safety certificates are still very important (and were ultimately introduced to give buyer’s peace of mind about what they are purchasing, as well as most crucially ensuring both the driver and other roads users remain safe)
The inspections for safety certificates cover all the basic safety necessities for a car, including, but not limited to
Lights
Brakes
Wheels and Tyres
Steering and Suspension components
Vehicle body damage
Seatbelts and restraints
Fluid leaks
Modifcations
To obtain a safety certificate, you will need to visit an Approved Inspection Station. These are the only businesses in Queensland that can legally provide a safety certificate. Lucky for you, Murrumba Auto Care in Kallangur have you covered. We can provide both printed and digital safety certificates on the day of inspection so you can get on the road as soon as possible.
